The Group Antenatal Care (G-ANC) initiative is an innovative, adolescent-responsive Group Antenatal Care model implemented by Girl Effect in Migori and Nairobi Counties-Kenya. It is designed to improve the health, wellbeing, and confidence of pregnant adolescent girls and young mothers by combining clinical antenatal services with structured peer support and health education.
About the Model
G-ANC shifts traditional one-on-one antenatal visits into facilitated group sessions where young mothers of similar pregnancy stages receive care together. Each session integrates medical check-ups, guided discussions, and interactive learning in a safe and supportive environment.
A unique feature of the G-ANC approach is community film screening sessions, which use relatable storytelling and visual content to spark dialogue on pregnancy, health-seeking behaviour, and life skills. These screenings strengthen learning, challenge harmful norms, and encourage young mothers to actively participate in their health journey.
Why G-ANC Matters
Adolescent mothers often face stigma, isolation, and fear when accessing maternal health services, leading to delayed or inconsistent care. The GANC model addresses these barriers by creating youth-friendly, non-judgmental spaces where girls feel respected and supported.
